Welcome to tPresident, Janice Oateshe official home of The Gamma Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

I am Janice Oates, President of the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated with over 200 members serving in the Columbia Metropolitan area for 75 years. Gamma Nu Omega Chapter is a chartered Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the nation’s first sorority established on January 15, 1908 by African American women on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C.

The Gamma Nu Omega Chapter was chartered on February 7, 1942 in Columbia, South Carolina by 17 sophisticated and dynamic women under the leadership of Soror Flossie M. Dedmond. Presently, the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter is comprised of a diverse group of college-trained women dedicated to improving the social and economic conditions in our city, state, nation and the world.

Today, that tradition has continued by providing high school and undergraduate students with scholarship funds to attend a college or university. The funds to support these scholarships are generated through the annual Pink Ice Gala® and the bi-annual Fashionetta® Pageant. Gamma Nu Omega also supports numerous local organizations such as the American Heart Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, Richland County Public Library, Harvest Hope Food Bank, Oliver Gospel Mission, Transitions, Palmetto Children’s Hospital, the NAACP, the First Ladies’ Walk for Life, Communities in Schools, Palmetto Health Walk for Life and Project Angel Tree.

Under the leadership of our International President, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, the 2014-2018 Program theme is Launching New Dimensions of Service and members of Gamma Nu Omega Chapter have the opportunity to use traditional and new programs to address the needs of our community. The program features five target areas, one Signature Program and Community Service Impact Days.

The five target areas are:

1. Educational Enrichment,
2. Health Promotion,
3. Family Strengthening,
4. Environmental Ownership and
5. Global Impact.

Over the next two years, I am beyond excited to work with the Gamma Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated’s leadership, members, sister chapters and sponsors to Launching  New Dimensions of Service ℠ in our local communities.
